Watching time, the only true currency // A journal from John B. Roberts

  • Pixar’s short films are online!

Maybe you knew this before, but I didn’t. Pixar has its short films online. These are often a treat at any new Pixar full-length release, but I haven’t seen them all before, despite seeing all the Pixar features. All in QuickTime, of course… Steve Jobs doesn’t get nothing out of being CEO of two companies!

  • Now that’s honesty

FWB Software admitted in a press release that previous announcements of an x86 emulator for MacOS X were vaporware. “I am sorry to have to admit that apparently the company has been a party to vaporware when it comes to the claims regarding RealPC.” [via Wired News seventh annual vaporware awards]

  • Book: The Innovator’s Dilemma

This is one of those times where I feel waaaayyy behind. Clayton Christensen published the original edition of The Innovator’s Dilemma in 1997, right as the tech/internet boom was in full roar. Of course, his research pre-dated that rush, and his timing just turned out to be wonderful for capturing a lot of attention. There…

  • Movie: My Big Fat Greek…

There are some movies I never want to watch. My Big Fat Greek Wedding, when it was in the theaters, is one of them. But it did get various good reviews and a reputation as a fun movie, if not a great movie. So we added it to the Netflix list, and last night, our…

My FTP settings have been broken at work for nearly three months… and no one (including me) noticed for six weeks. Guess that says it all about the influence of my work blog! Anyway, here’s an academic essay on blogging at work.

  • Links4U

OK, the links are for me, too, not just you. Someone else who wonders why ‘social’ software sites are businesses. I’m using LinkedIn, sort of. It works, I guess, but it’s a feature set, not a business. Are Friendster and Tribe.net and Ryze really any different than the defunct SixDegrees.com? I’m not covering new ground…

  • Science and the small things

Aren’t you glad someone studied the science of skipping stones? I am. The world record is 38 skips, by a human. But these scientists hope to use their newfound knowledge (20 degrees is the magic angle) and a stone-skipping machine to set a new world record. If someone has time to do this kind of…

  • Movie: Big Fish

Eleven days, we got out to see Big Fish, the new movie directed by Tim Burton. Had enough fantasy to suit Burton (Beetlejuice, anyone?), but always in the service of the story. I really enjoyed this movie, and I had the refreshing experience of knowing very little about it before I went to see it.…

  • David Ogilvy quotes

I’m not an advertising maven, but Ogilvy is cited as the genius of the field, at least for the last half of the 20th century. Here’s a list of quotes from Ogilvy. I liked this one: Hire people who are better than you are, then leave them to get on with it. Look for people…
